Anatomy of a Dab Rig

Here is a great infographic that explains all the nuances that separate dab rigs and traditional bongs. Dab rigs have a unique set of features that differentiate them from other bongs. Learning what makes rigs unique will empower you to pick the perfect rig for you! To learn more about dabs, check out our Guide to Dabs

What Is a Dab Rig?

Dab rigs are similar to a bong but there are some specific differences that set a dab rig apart. Dab rigs are designed to smoke legal oils or concentrates, which vaporize much different than other materials. Instead of a bowl, you heat up a metal or glass piece, called a nail or banger. The oil contacts the heated nail, this vaporizes the oil, and the oil is then inhaled through the rig in the same way you would hit a bong.

The rigs are designed to incorporate a nail made from either titanium, glass, or quartz which is then heated with a torch or a heating device known as an electric nail. Once the nail is adequately heated, the user will take a small amount of extract to the heated nail and vaporize their oil this way.

Quartz Banger

Quartz is a crystal that looks very similar to glass and is used because of the crystal’s ability to be heated to very high temperatures repeatedly without breaking. Many believe that bangers have the best taste of all the types of nails, although this is sometimes a matter of debate between smokers.

Smaller Size

Dab rigs are usually noticeably smaller than other bongs, this allows for the chamber to be more compact and doesn’t aerate the hit in the same way.

Male Joint

Male joints are very common on concentrate rigs. To properly use a male joint glass rig, you need to use the same sized female banger, nail, or dome.

Joint Angle

Most dab rigs will have a 90-degree joint instead of the common 45-degree angle most bongs have. This is so the nail sits upright and the vapor is moved efficiently.

Dab rigs can come in a variety of sizes and shapes, just like any other bong. Remember that when you’re dab rig gets dirty, it can change the flavor profile of your concentrates. If you want to learn how to clean a dab rig, we have put together a step by step guide!
